The Centre for Transpersonal Psychology

A Word From The Chair Of The Council

The trip from CTP to San Francisco to build links was very successful. Jan Mojsa and I spent two weeks at the beginning of April in the bay area sharing ideas and developing the possibilities of links between American and British transpersonal practitioners.

We met with the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP), California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), JFK University and the Association for Transpersonal Psychology (ATP). There were many ideas for collaboration and shared projects, particularly with ITP. This has begun to develop well and we are building bridges across the Atlantic, which was further reinforced at the Eurotas Conference in Moscow.

Concrete possibilities that might be implemented soon could be the exchange of teaching staff, courses, and research projects, which might generate a practical basis for institutional exchange. There was a great deal of complimentarity between organisations and more to build on than just good will, which in itself was considerable. There is the possibility to deliver the ITP Doctoral Programme in the UK and to develop student links and exchanges drawing upon CTP’s clinical expertise. Also it may be possible to develop inter-agency research projects with particular specialist agencies to share skills and develop the field.

It seems extraordinary that such a short trip should have generated so much energy but I think this is the coming way for Transpersonal Psychology and its development, lead in large part by the efforts of organisations such as Eurotas.

From CTP’s point of view it is important to recognise the input of Olga
Louchakova and Shani Robins of ITP who put so much work into this event. If it were not for this input I doubt the exchange would have happened, let alone been such a success. To emphasise our sense that there is much that can come from us all working together, both Olga and Shani will be running workshops at CTP in August (see below).

Update From The Executive Group

Open Day

CTP held an Open Day on Saturday 16 July at the Anamcara Centre for those interested in enrolling for the Therapeutic Counselling Certificate or the Diploma in Transpersonal Psychology. Both courses are scheduled to begin this September. There was a good turn out with attendees given a PowerPoint presentation of course contents, and lots of discussion with tutors and previous students. The day was rounded off with the experience of a transpersonal workshop, to give a feel for the soul of the courses. And of course, there were the inevitable transpersonal biscuits for all to share!!

STOP PRESS ! 3 Workshops During August from Faculty Staff from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in California.

Following on from the successful trip to California we are honoured to present the following workshops:

Sunday August 14th: Professor Olga Louchakova, "Prayer of the Heart"

Sunday August 21st: Dr Shani Robins, "Wisdom Therapy"

Sunday August 28th: Dr Judy Schavrien, "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder"

We are sure that each of these workshops will be fascinating and encourage you all to try to attend as many as you can. They will run from 10.00 to 16.30 at the Anamcara Centre, cost £45 each and will count for CPD hours. Further details of each individual workshop will be posted shortly. To book a place, please contact Sarah at enquiries@transpersonalcentre.org

New Telephone Number for CTP

CTP has a new permanent telephone number 0845 004 5359. The existing telephone number will be automatically transferred to the new number.

The telephone will not be staffed all of the time, but calls to the CTP number will receive a response. The best way to contact CTP will be by e-mail, either to enquiries@transpersonalcentre.org or to paul_dunne@transpersonalcentre.org Mail is, of course, another option, to the address at the bottom of this newsletter.

Accreditation

The Accreditation Board, chaired by Philippa Vick, met in June and the following candidates were awarded the Diploma and UKCP Accreditation, congratulations to them:

Julia Crabtree
Patricia Grey Amante
Fiona Mclachlan
Clifford Clifford

CTP Annual Membership renewal and UKCP Registration Renewal

The majority of members have returned the forms and sent in the payments for the above. Perhaps because they were sent out under separate cover some members have returned one but not the other. Please check that you have returned both forms and sent your cheque for £130 for CTP membership and £105 for UKCP

For Preparatory members the annual membership fee is £85.00

Curriculum Development

Jason Wright mentioned above the successful visit to the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto. Part of our collaboration included looking at ITP’s Global Program. The faculty is chaired by Judy Schavrien and Henry Poon, both of whom are excited about the possibility of global interconnection with members of CTP. The Global Program gives students an opportunity to study a range of online programmes, including a PhD in Psychology, Masters programmes in Transpersonal Psychology and one-year certificate programmes. The coursework balances education with the opportunity for personal development. From what I have seen, the material is cutting edge and incredibly rich, drawing on the work of a number of ITP staff (including Charles Tart).

CTP members who wish to join a programme, whether Psychotherapists in Preparation or Accredited Members, can use the hours for both CPD and congruent training hours for accreditation. With the current dollar/pound rate so good the cost is very reasonable.

To see the full range of programmes, check the ITP website on www.itp.edu To discuss details of a particular course you can email Judy (jschavrien@itp.edu) or Henry (hpoon@itp.edu). It may be possible that mentor support could be offered in the UK, via CTP.

The Therapeutic Counselling Certificate

The certificate is nearing the end of it’s first year. It has been a rich year for both tutors and students. The work produced has been amazing. In redeveloping the course part of our intention was to ensure that the training enabled students to enter Professional Preparation with robust counselling skills and a good coherent awareness of theoretical ideas. My sense is that we have done this due to the student’s incredible commitment to the training (and each other). It hasn’t always been an easy ride, but I trust that the combined support of Paul, Helen Bazzard, Linda Hartley and Russell Stone helped to create the strong vessel in which the work could alchemically come to life.

The New Diploma Course (PP4)

A new Professional Preparation course has been developed. Part of the struggle has been to put together a new (yet old!) course outline which will help CTP to meet the training requirements of accreditation / regulation. At the moment, as I’m sure you’re aware, there are many shifts occurring within the profession relating to accreditation and regulation. We have ensured that we are in line with current developments – whilst holding the heart of our work as Transpersonal Psychotherapists.

…And a Transpersonal MSc Option

Another exciting possibility that is being examined is the inclusion within the training of an MSc, through Liverpool John Moores University. Again, in the spirit of collaboration, we are working with Les Lancaster to make the possibility a reality. Watch this space!. I hope that what has been created will build on the Therapeutic Counselling Certificate (which incidentally also carries the qualifications of Level 2 and Level 3 Certificates in Counselling Skills and Studies awarded through CPCAB).

Feedback on the Counselling Certificate

We recently received a wonderful note entitled ‘Snow Melt’ from one of last year’s students. It is gratifying to see that the transpersonal note is spreading to new hearts and minds. Please see the introduction below, the full version is available by clicking here.

"Spring thaw. This process comes to mind when I think my experience on the CTP Foundation course along with eleven other trainees. In spring, the earth shifts on its axis towards the sun. In a similar manner, I feel that the course has shifted my axis, and, in so doing, has aligned me with the light of new knowledge in relation to counselling as well as my own personal development. Throughout the year, the theoretical knowledge has been grounded in the rich soil of experiential learning and practice. In such an environment, all of us flourished."

Book News

Liz and Nigel have completed their new book, "Nothing to Lose, Psychotherapy, Buddhism & Living Life". It was launched on Wednesday 15 June

"Ways through the Wall: Approaches to Citizenship in an Interconnecting World" – the book of the London EUROTAS and CTP Conference has now been published, under ISBN 1-904439-54-3 Price: £15.99. Edited by John Drew and David Lorimer this book consists of papers from 29 members of the international transpersonal community.

I haven’t had any book recommendations from members as yet, so I will get the ball rolling. I recently read "The Primal Wound: A Transpersonal View of Trauma, Addiction, and Growth" by John Firman and Ann Gila. Written from a psychosynthesis perspective, but with a very wide range of work referenced, I found this a very useful book.

Feedback and Additional Content For The Bulletin

We are keen that this bulletin becomes a regular forum for sharing between members and friends. If you have any poems, prose, books that you feel transpersonalists should be aware of, or if you just fancy a rant, please send your pearls of wisdom to jeremy.brooks@ntlworld.com and I will include it in future editions.

We would also like to hear your thoughts concerning the bulletin, and any suggestions you may have for improving it!
